The state of children’s mental health across the world

Children and young people across the world could feel the impact of the coronavirus pandemic on their mental health and well-being for many years to come says UNICEF in a new report.

The State of the World’s Children 2021 – On my Mind report explains that children’s mental health is affected by circumstances around them, such as the pandemic. It notes that psychiatrists saw signs of distress in children and young people who experienced closed playgrounds during lockdown.

In the report, UNICEF urges governments to invest more money and resources into supporting children’s mental health, especially those from poorer communities and vulnerable family backgrounds. It calls for commitment, communication and action as part of the approach to promote good mental health for every child.

The report draws on background research papers by individuals and institutions across the world.
