Outdoor play and children’s mental health

29-09-2020

A report by the Children and Young People’s Mental Health Coalition (CYPMHC) shares information on the importance of outdoor play for children’s health and well-being.

The CYPMHC annual report 2020 explores how play has changed during the coronavirus pandemic, with research showing a decrease in peer-play and play in playgrounds in England. Due to the lack of opportunities for outdoor play during the pandemic, the report emphasises that education settings in England should give plenty of space and time for children to play to ensure they are happy and healthy.

Additionally, the report highlights that by 2020/2021 the spending on play facilities in England will have decreased by 44 percent since 2017/2018, despite the benefits of play and outdoor space to physical and mental health being proven.
