Play First: call to prioritise play in schools
Child mental health experts are urging the UK Government to prioritise play when schools are reopened. This is to support children’s social and emotional well-being.
The experts’ evidence-based recommendations detailed in Play First: Supporting Children’s Social and Emotional Wellbeing During and After Lockdown focus on the importance of giving children opportunities to play.
The recommendations include ensuring the public health message to families and education staff provides clear information on the social and emotional benefits of play. The experts also recommend giving children time to play at school with their peers, even while social distancing remains necessary.
The experts have written to the key ministers in Wales, England, Scotland and Northern Ireland to share their calls and recommendations.
