Exclusive: Damian Hinds tells schools to ‘get kids climbing trees’ to build character

The Education Secretary of the UK Government, Damian Hinds, will publish a ‘bucket list’ of goals for children to achieve before leaving primary school. The list will include: climbing trees, building rockets and watching the sunrise. The Department for Education wants schools and pupils to view the development of character and resilience as being just as important as exam results and qualifications. The list is based on the National Trust’s 50 things to do before you’re 11¾.

Why our kids are going to play outside this winter, and yours should too, according to science

During the winter, UK children spend less time playing outside, despite the proven benefits of outdoor play, according to this article. Dr Robert Murray, a paediatrician, says that a reduction in outdoor time during the winter could be due to a fear of cold weather and the effort it takes for parents to get children ready to go outside. When the weather is severe, Dr Murray recommends indoor activities that encourage an appreciation of the outdoor environment.

Playground closures impacting negatively on children's health say researchers
ITV News 

The Association of Play Industries (API) says that the ‘alarming rate’ at which playgrounds in south west England continue to close could have a negative impact on children. According to the API, the closures will worsen the obesity problem and create more mental health issues amongst children and young people. The research from 2016 found that local authorities have closed 347 playgrounds across England since 2014.
